Christine Ussler, Founder and Principal

Christine Ussler founded Artefact, Inc. in 1986 shortly after graduating from Columbia University with a M.Arch. Her more than thirty years of experience includes buildings from 200 square feet to over 200,000 square feet in scale, and from finely detailed residential to larger schools, educational centers, theaters, churches, and commercial projects. She has a particular expertise in working within urban settings and within regulated historic districts, and recently completed a 90,000-square-foot new school building located in a historic district.

Christine has been a consultant to historic review boards in eastern Pennsylvania for thirty years and was a member of the State Historic Preservation Board from 2016 to 2022. Her understanding of designing new buildings in a historic district is a unique skill not matched by many architects. She has had a longstanding interest in “green” building and sees saving older buildings as an environmentally sensitive endeavor.
