Armstrong House

Preserving history at the nation’s oldest HBCU

Armstrong House is a late-eighteenth-century property at Cheyney University, America’s oldest historically black institution of higher education. A historic home rumored to have served as an Underground Railroad station during the Civil War, the building was in need of extensive restoration due to years of abandonment. In collaboration with C. F. Portner Architects, Artefact conducted historical research on the property and developed a design for restoration that would return the house to its historic appearance.
